How do you prepare for triathlon competitions?
I can say I prepare 24 hours a day, 12 months a year for triathlon competitions. It’s my job and lifestyle. In addition to training, I daily monitor my rest and recovery, ensure adequate nutrition, check my equipment, and maintain mental well-being. I also handle logistical aspects, such as booking flights and accommodations, and explore ways to fund my endeavors.
What is your training regimen like?
My training typically spans 3-6 hours a day, totaling 20-30 hours per week, depending on the training period. I swim 6 times a week, covering around 5 km in one session. I bike 4-5 times a week, totaling 200-400 km, and run 6 times a week, covering 50-80 km. The week is usually structured with the majority being aerobic training, interspersed with 2 intensive sessions per discipline. Mondays and Thursdays serve as lighter recovery days with only 2 lighter sessions each day.
Which triathlon competition stands out as the most memorable, and why?
The European Championships in sprint-distance triathlon in Tartu in 2018. Winning the bronze medal on home soil was a significant triumph. The feeling of providing joy to triathlon fans and my loved ones in that moment stays with me for a lifetime.
How do you stay motivated during training?
My biggest source of motivation is personal growth. Knowing I have room to become a better athlete fuels my daily motivation. Thinking about specific upcoming competitions also helps. There are days when even top athletes feel exhausted, and in those times, discipline and the understanding that it’s a job and obligation come into play. I’m fortunate to have inspiring training partners who contribute to my motivation.
What role does FlexBeam play in your training and competitions? How does it help you achieve your goals?
FlexBeam is a relatively new companion on this journey. It primarily assists in my recovery, used at the end of the day on stiff or problematic areas. It gives me an extra sense of assurance that I’ve taken that additional step to be better. Another way I use FlexBeam is before significant training sessions. For instance, I undergo a 10-minute cycle on each leg as part of my muscle preparation before activation exercises.
